Rachel Kim-Whitfield '08 has received the 2026 Emerging Leader Award from the American Institute of Architects' Pennsylvania chapter, one of the organization's highest honors for architects under 40. The award recognizes Rachel's innovative work designing sustainable, affordable housing for first-time homebuyers in Camden, New Jersey.
As a principal at the Camden-based firm Groundwork Architecture, Rachel has led the design of more than 150 units of net-zero-energy housing over the past six years, with a focus on modular construction techniques that keep costs low without sacrificing durability or design quality. Her signature project, the Cooper Street Row Homes, has been cited by state housing officials as a model for future affordable housing development across New Jersey.
Rachel earned her Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania and got her start working on community design projects in West Philadelphia. She traces her interest in socially conscious design back to a GFS service-learning trip during her junior year, which she says "opened my eyes to how much architecture can either help or hurt a community, depending on who it's designed for and with."
The AIA Pennsylvania chapter will formally present the award at its annual gala this November in Harrisburg. Rachel says she plans to use the recognition as a platform to push for policy changes that make sustainable affordable housing easier to build statewide.
