Maya Thornton '02 has been named Chief Medical Officer at Delaware Valley Health Partners, where she will oversee clinical operations across twelve regional hospitals throughout southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. In her new role, Maya will lead a team of more than 200 physicians and set clinical policy for a system that serves upwards of 1.2 million patients annually.
Maya joined Delaware Valley Health Partners eleven years ago as an emergency medicine attending after completing her residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. She rose through a series of leadership roles, including Director of Emergency Services and, most recently, Vice President of Clinical Affairs, before being tapped for the system's top medical post.
Reflecting on the path that led her here, Maya credits her years running cross country at GFS with shaping the discipline she now relies on in high-pressure medical settings. "Distance running teaches you to manage discomfort without panicking, to pace yourself through something that feels impossible in the moment," she said. "That's basically a description of a shift in the ER. I think about our old coach's voice more often than people would expect."
Maya lives in Mount Airy with her husband and two children, and still runs most mornings along the Wissahickon — often, she says, past the very trails her GFS team once trained on.
